Details:
The golf is championship caliber and the secluded, scenic layout is reason enough to spend all day at Glenwood Golf Club. Because of the constantly undulating terrain and often, severely sloping fairways, placement off the tee is paramount. Playing a slice to any of the left-to-right sloping fairways means a prolonged search among the trees and added strokes to your score.

In addition, the elevation changes, sometimes subtle, along with a few incredibly long greens (18 is a good 40-yards deep) can mean as much as a three-club difference when selecting a club for your approach.

In October 2005, the club was named to the Natural State Golf Trail.

Course architect, Bobby McGee, cut Glenwood from the native hardwoods and pines, paying close attention to preserving the natural, rolling hills and undulating terrain of the layout creating a modestly difficult, championship golf course that has reached maturity with grace.

So what inspired Golf Digest to give Glenwood 4 ˝ out of 5 possible stars when they reviewed it? It’s the overall package. “Excellent value. Fun to play... Great course. The par 3s were beautiful with water surrounding 2 of them. The price was incredible ... Best bargain, great course, beautiful setting. ”What more can you say?

So come to Glenwood Golf Club with the expectation that you are going to have an incredible golf experience without the usual headaches and frustrations of playing at its more famous counterparts. The course plays to a relatively innocuous, 6,561-yards from the back tees and carries a rating of 71.7.

The course gently rolls and undulates in and out of the native hardwood and pine forests, with the occasional tee shot blasting out of a narrow shoot. The Bermuda fairways are often severely sloped, demanding accuracy from the tee and a relative degree of spin control to avoid rolling what looks like a good tee shot into the awaiting woods.

Many of the approach shots are uphill and require solid thinking and yardage adjustments in order to get close to the flagsticks. The bent-grass greens are often incredibly deep and undulating placing an additional premium on club selection. The wrong club choice can leave you with a 30-yard roller-coaster putt that you can only hope to leave close.

Nowhere is this more evident than on the signature par three #6.The hole is not particularly long or difficult on paper, but choose the wrong club into this par three and you’re putting from another area code or reteeing from the drop area.

It’s 178-yards of carry across a beautifully blue, ball-collecting pond. The green juts out into the water creating a peninsula, with water on three sided and large landscaping rocks protecting the front. Many a good round has bounced from those rocks to the bottom of the pond.

The closing holes are the epitome of the style of golf at Glenwood Golf Club. If you’re accurate, play to the right spots and think well, birdies are not difficult to come by. Take the par three sixteenth. It’s an uphill shot to a green where all you can see is the pin. It looks simple on paper, But—you absolutely must hit the green to have an easy par. Oh yes, watch out for the big tree that comes into play off the tee.

Club choice, solid thinking and distance control are just as important on the par three, 17th. A sheer drop of 50-feet from the tee accompanied by a long, kidney-shaped green, make this 126-yard puppy dog seem more like a junk yard dog. Oh—there is of course, OB long and left. Where else are you more likely to hit it on a downhill par tree?

Coming home on 18, you’re faced a with tree-lined, dog leg left with yet another fairway sloping left-to-right placing pressure on accuracy from the tee. Though the hole is relatively short, your approach on this par four can call for as many as three different clubs depending upon flag location. The approach is uphill about ten feet and there is out of bounds for every errant shot on the left side, once again placing an enormous amount of pressure on your thinking and judgment.

The holes are not difficult on the surface and, if you listen to the locals and garner some course knowledge, Glenwood can most certainly be had. But, go it alone and hip-and-hope—you’ll spend a lot of time enjoying the absolute beauty of the place up close. Place your shots well and keep your wits—your day at Glenwood will be just as Golf Digest called it:

“Best bargain, great course, beautiful setting." Golf Digest
